7 Tips: Indulge Without Gaining the Bulge on Vacation
I realize the title of this post may come across a bit confusing as my belly seems to have a bit of a bulge…but I digress… #pregnantrunner needs vaca tips too!
By george I figured it out! I went on a weekend getaway with the husband (sidenote: Charleston was amazing! I loved all the old history! #nerdforlife) and came back feeling guilt-free, satisfied and happy. Instead of coming back feeling full of regret, bloat (well besides the obvious baby bloat, ha!) and overall gross I simply felt good…So, I wanted to share with y’all what worked for me this past weekend.
The main goal with fitness while on vacation is to keep my mind happy and healthy, keep the extra weight gain to a minimum and to not allow my typical routine to get completely trashed! We are all too familiar with that slippery slope. I’m all about relaxing but, I’m also about not becoming a total slug. Go too far in any one direction and you can get real uncomfortable real quick. By keeping a good balance you can go into vacation without feeling deprived and come out of vacation not feeling like a tub of lard.
1.) Go into vacation mode with a healthy frame of mind! I didn’t go into this weekend getaway expecting to train hard, run tons of miles or practice yoga. I went into this adventure prepared to relax, splash in the waves, kick back at night with some good food and explore the city.
2.) But, don’t be afraid to squeeze in a short 30 minute run or workout! I didn’t exercise on vacation with the intention to lose weight or train for anything specific. I chose to exercise because it starts my day off with a clear mind and puts me in a great mood! Well, and it helps stave off that extra scoop of ice-cream…
3.) Pack appropriately. The Eaglecreek* Sport Tote made it super efficient and easy to pack all my necessary goods. I was able to get my running gear and ‘normal people’ clothes in one bag tucked and organized nicely. It has quickly become my new favorite weekend bag, race day and beach day bag! And it’s PINK!
From their site:
- Antimicrobial treatment prevents odor-causing microbial growth
- TPU-lining allows for easily visibility of items
- Elastic strap can secure yoga mats and other items to the tote (I tucked my shoes in there!)
- Internal organization will keep all of your valuables safe and separated
- Water-repellent and ultra-lightweight so you can carry more items you might need (I literally shoved everything in this bag.)
- Washable to keep it in pristine condition
Also comes with a lifetime warranty so very much worth the investment.
4.) Plan accordingly. Although this weekend trip was spontaneous (thank you husband…I can not express just how much of a blessing this was for our relationship!) I was able to make a few choices ahead of time.
- Hotel with treadmill
- Packed workout gear
- Packed our weekend’s supply of fresh fruits and veggies
We got a hotel with a gym option and packed our gear, Garmin, Yurbuds (by the way these are only $20 on Amazon now! When I first bought a pair I think I spent over $80?!), Altras**..what else does a girl need?! I chose to run indoors on the treadmill because Charleston was just too dang humid and hot. Maybe if I wasn’t currently pregnant I would have opted for the sweatfest but there’s NO shame in choosing indoors.
5.) Be ready to indulge but also ready to sneak in your daily veggies! I made a deal with myself: eat the minimum daily quota with veggies and then eat whatever my sweet tastebuds desire this weekend! By snacking on my veggies I was able to maintain a pretty solid diet. Plus, all that fiber helps push it all through. Right?! ha! By noshing on veggies you help fill your belly up so you can indulge comfortably without waaaay overdoing it. I may or may not have had a late night pizza snack or two however…
And the hotel had a waffle maker!!!!!!!! WAFFLES for baby!!!!!!
6.) Get moving! My husband and I did a lot of walking! We enjoyed the beach and lounging at the hotel room in the evenings but most of our day included activity. Make sure you’ve got some fun activities planned. Explore! I will tell disclose that I am chicken little when it comes to nighttime beach walks in Charleston now. They had a sign that read, “BEWARE coyotes in area.” eek. My husband had to drag my butt out to the beach that night! But SO worth it. Those stars in the sky….
7.) RELAX! You will not suddenly become obese, lose all your fitness or gain ten pounds of cellulite if you overeat for a day or two. The worst that can happen is a bit of bloating. And, if you’re remaining active on vacation, squeezing in that 30 minute run/workout you’ll be just fine. So give yourself permission to enjoy this beautiful life. There are 365 days in a year. Allow some wiggle room for pleasure.

BONUS TIP: HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE! I carried around a bottle of water with me everywhere. I’d fill that sucker up with ice because otherwise half-way through the day it would become hot water!
Extra bonus tip: if you find yourself in Charleston, SC we found a little hole in the wall called Sesame Burger and I swear it was the most amazing burger in the world! If you pull up and hesitate (because I sure did…) don’t be afraid. They source from local farms, make their own ketchup and have an awesome variety of dishes. Like Gouda mac’n’cheese….I would’ve gotten a pic of my food but I ate it all too quickly. My sincerest apologies.
Do you workout while on vacation or do you completely just ‘let go’? Favorite vacation dinner splurge?
